Web 2.0 is a web application that facilitates participatory information sharing and collaboration on the World Wide Web. The tools of web 2.0 has three parts namely; rich internet application, service oriented application and social media ( for podcasting, blogging, tagging, contributing, bookmarking and networking). The excitement of using Web 2.0 has created a virtual community in a global village. It mutually maximizes collective intelligence, crowdsourcing and adds value to each participant by formalizing and creating dynamic information sharing.web1.pngscherlund.blogspot.com
Today you can practically perform the following on web:
•    Share photos.
•    Share videos with others.
•    Update people with email.
•    Engage with online communities.
•    Communicate with many people and use their networks.
•    Track issues relevant to ones campaign.
These listed performances have added these values to our daily living:
Values created for using Web 2.0:
    Disaster Management.
    eGoverment- Citizen participation.
    International partnership.
    Mobile Banking for grassroot.
    National Digital Strategy.
    Digital Education.
    Empowering Women
Web 2.0 also enhanced women empowerment by allowing the :
i. Building networks of relationships between different groups in society (for example: www.confidencecoalition.org)
ii.     Fighting of discrimination, exclusion and excessive inequalities.
iii.     Enabling of upward social mobility.
Women are the key resources in today’s based economies as greater participation in ICT would lead to more innovation and economic progress in the world .
There are also numerous examples of women gathering online to create virtual communities that help to advance towards a shared goal or solve issues pertinent to everyday life. These online networks manifest themselves through existing social networking tools such as twitter or facebook or can take the form of online discussion forum.
The limitations or challenges of this network to women are:
     No equitable Access.
Language Problems (Majority are limited to English).
Culture (Negative about women and girls/too modern).
Lack of adequate skill/Low skills level.
    Affordability (Airtime/internet costs).
    Infrastructure (Connectivity problems.
Therefore, for greater network of women and global empowerment of women, every Government should find ways to ensure that women have access to Web 2.0 tools and have the necessary skills to do so. And to facilitative positive change, it is necessary to address existing gender gaps with respect to access to and benefit from new technologies (http://worldpulse.com/node/28034)web2.jpg             we can.jpg
In the last few decades, there has been steady increasing awareness of the need to empower women in order to improve their socioeconomic status to be able to cope and also contribute effectively in this period of economic crisis. Provision and access to information (ATI) are vital factors in empowerment, thus, many organisations such as library and resource centres and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have been involved in empowering women in Nigeria. (https://worldpulse.com/node/43894)

Information Technology (IT) has been promoted as an important tool in ensuring that marginalized groups, particularly women, are included in the development of the global information society. The importance of gender mainstreaming in national and organizational Information and Communication Technology (ICT) policies and strategies cannot be overstated. While IT alone cannot end gender inequality, it can go a long way in catalyzing social change and empowerment. IT helps in poverty reduction and for the economic empowerment of poor women in Nigeria.
Because of its unique benefits, ICT has been recognized as a tool for empowering women. ICT are indispensable tools used by all to deal with the limitations of time, cost and distance problems and create new opportunities. One wonders if the ICT profession is a male affair. ICT is meant for all (women and men) because we live in the age where quality access to information and knowledge is key to survival and performance. Individual, organizations and government all need and use ICT to be faster, more cost effective and efficient. ICT makes it possible for information to travel faster and cheaper and size of information and distance are no longer barriers.
However, women still have some challenges using ICT – while some believe it’s a male affairs, others cannot comprehend the complexity of the technology.
Goal 3 of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is to promote gender equality and empower women. Women play a vital role in our society. There is a relationship between the empowerment of women and reduction of poverty and until there’s a creation of wealth, reduction of poverty cannot take place. IT can help women in creating wealth through the use of some social network sites like Facebook, Myspace, Blogs. These sites allow each user to own a page which gives detailed information about the person. This also serves as a means of knowledge sharing, advertising/marketing and social networking, i.e. bringing together one or more persons or organizations.web2.00.jpgwomenn.jpg

ACCESS TO INFORMATIONwomen...jpgTo get the full benefits of ICT, women must have access to it. Women should be able to use it. Must have the ability to utilize the benefits, earn, interact and create wealth with the information and resources provided.
Without real access to technology, there is a limit to how and what women can contribute. Fewer women are accessing and using computers and the internet compared to men. Access needs to improve availability and quality. More women (especially in the rural and informal sector) need to use ICT to get things done in their lives and work. Women must participate actively in the use of ICT, i.e. users, professionals, producers and entrepreneurs.
To make a difference in the society, women must engage in productive ICT & ICT- driven activities, usage and production.
In different fields and professions, women can use ICT to enable growth, create wealth, increase productivity and create new opportunities.
Better access to information and the ability to tap into the benefits of ICT enables women to be more competitive because ICT is so critical to the knowledge economy. You simply can’t function at your best if you don’t understand, adopt and grasp ICT.
ICT has no gender restrictions! We can smash these stereotyping once and for all (http://www.w-teconline.org/nfsblog/?p=142)
Web 2.0 is an extremely exciting and important tool for women of all ages and all works of life. It is truly an eye opener and makes you feel that one can accomplish a lot. It encourages collaboration with others and one can perform social networking in this global village. Web 2.0  gives one a sense of belonging as a researcher.
Women love to be in companies and do collective activities, which helps in passing the time. This is a good way of networking. women networking and empowering each other

An old adage says “if you think knowledge is expensive, try ignorance”. A state of not knowing is one which is not desirable for anyone and is more devastating when a woman does not know. This because she is most likely to transfer this ignorance to her offspring and then there results more ignorant women and men.
